What are Spotlights?

Spotlights are a narrow, intense beam of light focused on one area. The light from a spotlight is very powerful as it is condensed in one spot. This feature makes spotlights perfect for concentrating on work like camping, hunting, fishing etc. Spotlights have a condenser lens and powerful illumination bulbs to deliver a special kind of light.

What do Spotlights do?

Spotlights are non-main light sources that are not used for regular purposes. They are made for specific purposes in which focused light is needed. The spotlights are best suited for places where you need a highly-concentrated ray of light over a small space. Some are waterproof and can be used in adverse situations, in camping, fishing, hiking etc. They can also be used for highlighting a piece of sculpture in your living room or providing task light over your outdoor area. They are also used in theatres.

Are Spotlights Better Than Regular Bulbs?

Regular bulbs and Spotlights, both, are used for different purposes. Regular bulbs are mostly used in indoor settings for general lighting, while Spotlights are used for specific purposes. But there are certain advantages that spotlights have. They are as follows:

• Spotlights are used for highlighting a specific area as they offer a very condensed light beam.
• Spotlights give a long light and can illuminate area over a long distance.
• They have brighter light as compared to regular bulbs.
• Most spotlights are rugged, and waterproof, perfect for water sports, unlike regular bulbs.
• They have a lightweight design and some are rechargeable with built in power bank.

Can you replace any bulb with Spotlights?

Regular bulbs cannot be replaced by spotlights as regular bulbs are usually used for general lighting while spotlights are used for very specific purposes. Bulbs are not interchangeable with Spotlights and vice-versa. Though spotlights can be used for general lighting but are not generally used. If the bulbs are GU10 and and if they are with in a spotlight then you may replace them with integrated LED downlights or just replace the bulbs with LED ones. 

What Should Be Considered When Choosing Spotlights?

The main point to consider while choosing a spotlight is to know the purpose and depending on the purpose, one needs to check the following

• Beam angle: the beam angle determines the type of spotlight. Choose 24° if you don’t know what to choose.
• Colour temperature: Choose the colour needed.
• Anti-glare design: The best way to choose a spotlight is to buy a spotlight with an anti-glare design.
• Wattage: choose wattage according to the size of the space and purpose.

Are Spotlights Costly?

The cost of a spotlight would depend on the type of spotlight. Since, at homes, these lights are usually used as non-main lights, thus investing on them completely depends on your budget. Whereas, for outdoor settings, one can choose from the available options in the market, one that fits their requirement and financial plan.

Do Spotlights Save Energy?

Spotlights, nowadays are using LED technology which are energy efficient. In comparison to Halogen Spotlights, LED spotlights save way more energy.

What are the Types of Spotlights?

There are two major types of spotlights available in the market:

One, requires a connection to an external power supply.

And others, that can be recharged, and contain a battery pack, that allows them to be used anywhere.

Another way of classifying spotlights is based on use:

Surface mounted spotlight: can be installed without a ceiling.

Embedded spotlights: modern and simple, clean and neat, but need to be mounted on ceilings.

Track spotlights: You can move it freely on a track.

Plano Convex Spotlights: used in theatre lighting.

Ellipsoidal Spotlights: Used in theatre lighting but with spotlight shutters.

Fresnel Spotlights: used mainly in lighthouses.

Followspot Spotlights: Follows a performer or person on stage.

What are Spotlights Colours?

Spotlight colours are Warm light or white light, depending on the colour temperature. The colour may be whiter or more yellow depending on the colour temperature. The colour temperature commonly used in general households is 3000k-4500k.
