IP stands for Ingress Protection and the ‘20’ rating refers to its level of protection against solids and liquids. An IP20 downlight is protected against solid objects larger than 12.5mm but isn’t protected against liquids. This means they are generally suitable for indoor use, such as in bedrooms, hallways, or living rooms where there is no risk of water coming into contact with the fitting.
